Exercise
English Bulldogs do not require a lot of exercise. However, some exercise to keep them fit will improve their health.
Space/Living Conditions
English Bulldogs are well suited for apartment life and do not require a yard if sufficiently walked. They are suited to a temperate climate and struggle in extreme temperatures.
Grooming
Due to their smooth short haired coat, English Bulldogs do not require extensive grooming. Brush and bathe them only when necessary. Care should be taken to clean the inside of the wrinkles on the face with a damp cloth every day. They are average shedders.
Training
English Bulldogs are not known for their obedience and training can be quite a struggle. Usually, training involves teaching them the basics to be a well behaved dog and does not extend to "specialist" behavior or tricks.
Temperament
Although their appearance can be somewhat intimidating, English Bulldogs are affectionate, docile, reliable and wonderful with children. They love attention and will actively seek it from the members of the family. Sometimes they can be a bit dominating and needs a gentle but firm owner.
English Bulldog puppies are full of energy and therefore need behavior training as soon as possible, but they slow down when they get older.
They can be aggressive towards other dogs when feeding, but this is quite rare.
Health Problems
Breathing problems, skin irritations, prone to overheating. English Bulldog puppies are often delivered by Caesarean section.
Origin
English Bulldogs were bred and developed in Great Britain as a hunting and fighting dog and was mentioned as far back as 1590, in Shakespeare's Henry VI. It's popularity increased when it was used to bait and fight bulls and bears in arena combat. This practise was outlawed in the nineteenth century.
In modern times breeders concentrate on developing their non-aggressive traits and the English Bulldog of today has a very different temperament to his ancestor.
