Exercise

Boxers are active dogs and require a lot of exercise. They need to go on long daily walks, as well as playing or working regularly.

Although they will survive in an apartment if given a lot of exercise, they really need a medium sized yard.

Space/Living Conditions

Boxers are fairly active indoors and as such require some outside space. They are suited to a temperate climate and struggle in extreme temperatures.

Grooming

Due to their smooth short haired coat, Boxers do not require a lot of grooming. Brush them occasionally and bathe them only when necessary as it removes the natural oils from their skin. They are quite clean and normally groom themselves. They are average shedders.

Training

Obedience training is essential for Boxers, as they are highly intelligent and energetic. They love to learn new tricks and do well in competitions.

Temperament

Boxers are playful, affectionate, self assured and very curious. They bond very closely with their family and are excellent with children. They normally get along well with other pets in the family.

Even though they are curious, Boxers are wary of strangers and fearless if threatened. As such, they make very good guard dogs.

They require a lot of attention and when it is lacking they will resort to bad behavior in a bid to get noticed.

Health Problems

This breed has some major health concerns such as cardiomyopathy, sub-aortic stenosis, and hip dysplasia. A proper diet is essential as they have sensitive stomachs, which can lead to indigestion.

Origin

Boxers were bred and developed in Germany as a hunting and fighting dog in the mid-nineteenth century. They were bred by crossing a Bullenbeiszer with a Barenbeiszer (mastiff type dogs). They were then later crossed with a Bulldog.

Their past jobs included hunting, bull baiting, cart pulling, herding livestock and becoming circus acts. Today they are widely used in search and rescue and police work.

Although Boxers were very agressive dogs in the past, today they are, through breeding, very gentle and ideal family pets.
